Completed projects: Good Health and Well Being

Construction of a  Mbenjere Maternity

Project description:

The aim of the project is to provide adequate space for mothers to deliver and to conduct under as well as providing post natal clinics. Previously expectant mothers delivered in an environment where privacy was compromised (i.e. old clinics with the delivery room too small and facing the public yard). The consequences were that expecting mothers preferred to deliver at home wherefore in case of complication they do not have access to medical attention and they could put their life and the life of the child at risk. The government policy is to ensure that all expectant mothers deliver at the institution so that no life be lost. The construction of a separate building from the existing clinic provided the needed environment for mothers to deliver. They are attended by professional Midwives and nurses in a private environment, the Maternity is also used to conduct antenatal and post natal clinics and family planning

Direct beneficiaries: 254 mothers per year

Indirect beneficiaries:  5600 population of the surrounding area

Total cost:  26.000 EURO

Funded by:  Banca di Credito Cooperativo Cremasco

Partners:  Ministry of Health, Chipata District

Duration:  From January 2020 to October  2020

Support to children with disabilities

Project description:

Zambian society is generally poor (most of the population lives on less than $ 1 a day), where basic needs are not always met on a daily basis. For this reason, the care of a disabled child takes second place, compared to the family needs dictated by the survival of each day. In addition to this, in some environments there is the difficulty of acceptance by the family and peers of the disability, which feed into isolation attitudes for the child.

There are also logistical difficulties of transport (i.e. large distances, bad roads, high weight of the child when he grows up); access to school facilities (i.e. architectural barriers, absence of equipped bathrooms, insufficient qualified personnel to manage a disabled child); and access to hospital facilities.

In order to support the disabled children (with hydrocefalus , Spina Bifida and Celebral Palsy ) in the last four years PNA Zambia has conducted the following activities.

Providing financial support for over 30 children with disabilities, and their carers, to reach medical care from specialised hospitals in Lusaka (Beit Cure or University Teaching Hospital) each year. The cost of transport, alone, exceeds US$50, making it otherwise prohibitive for most families.

Annual workshops for 60 mothers and children with disabilities.  Here they meet with neurologists, nurses, physiotherapists and nutritionists to provide check-ups, as well as instruct in: building capacity in the care of the shant (for Hydrocefalus), general cleanliness, exercises (that include co-ordination games), nutrition and feeding techniques, and the rights of people with disabilities. Carers also have access to psychological and social support during their stay.

Distribution of 24 wheelchairs to children, accompanied by specialist fitting from a qualified physiotherapist.  This was achieved through collaboration with Wheelchair for Kids (Australia), Blu Spring (Switzerland), and Progetto Marco (Italy).

Sponsorship of school fees for children with disabilities. Many schools are reluctant to accept children with disabilities, we work closely with them to ensure sponsored children are integrated and are accessing quality education. The construction of a community centre in Chipata, that will serve as a space for workshops and clinics for children with disabilities. It has closed the first part of the project, a revision of the activities and potential activists will help to assess the needs and the future activities to be done.

Direct beneficiaries: 30 children with disabilities (200 total in the program)

Indirect beneficiaries: 150 in the local communities

Total cost: 8000 euro

Funded by: Blu Spring, Golden Bottle Foundation, Private donors

Partners: Chipata General hospital and surrounding District hospitals

Duration: Oct 2019 to Feb 2020
